CHANGES - Odd Day Class

You will take the quiz on Chapter 5, Section 1 and Chapter 8, Section 2 on Friday, December 10. Since I need time to discuss your labs with you, the labs are going to be due on Tuesday, December 14. Your class has not had as much time as the other classes to go over the information for the test, so you will have a modified test on Thursday, December 16. You will likely only be able to do "Biome in a Bag" lab and not "Modeling Diversity and Disease". Your "Choice Assignment" is still due on Tuesday as well (sorry for two assignments on one day).

Due to Viewing of "Drood",

I am canceling the "Design Your Own Lab".

Choice Assignment

Choose 1 of the 4 topics. Topics are due on December 13/14.

1. Animal Adaptation to Heat - Research the cavernous sinus system which keeps mammal brains cool in intense heat.

2. Touring the Forest - Develop a 3 fold, double sided travel brochure to advertise camping vacations in one of the four forest ecosystems in this unit.

3. We're All Thumbs! - Discuss how animals are adapted to their environment. The opposable thumb shared by humans and primates equips them for many activities.

4. World Biomes - List at least three biomes that do not seem to fit the latitude and altitude model in the book. Analyze why the biomes do not fit and write an essay expressing your thinking.

Homework

Read Chapter 5, Sections 1,2; Chapter 8, Sections 1,2 for Wednesday and Thursday.

Homework and a Change to Upcoming Assignments

Don't forget that your report is due on Monday or Tuesday, depending upon when your class meets. You don't need to be concerned about your presentation until Friday, November 12. We will set up a presentation schedule in class on Monday and Tuesday. I have moved the Study of Populations lab to after Thanksgiving. So we will do that lab on Monday and Tuesday- November 29, 30 - with the lab write-up due December 6,7.

Trip changes first! Odd Day goes on Friday (dress warmly and bring gloves); Even Day goes on Monday (a bit warmer but dress appropriately!).

Field Trip Permission Slips

Make sure that you bring in your PERMISSION SLIPS for Wednesday and Thursday! If you did not get one, you will next class.

Time Management

At this point, you should be able to put all your Fertergent lab stuff - Title Page, Purpose, Hypothesis, Materials and Procedure (see handout), Data Tables, Day One and Day Four Observations, Day 1 Control Count - on your computer! You can also begin to answer some of those analysis questions on the last sheet and do the words and concept map in the front of the packet.

Oil Spill Lab is also due next week so begin that lab as soon as you finish it in class.

Writing Assignment

Imagine that all the landfills are full and no more land is available to make new landfills. Write a short story describing the scenario that you think will occur. Stories should describe what people would do with their waste and also consider economic, political and environmental consequences.

Please word process! Make sure that you spell check. A good length is at least one page at 12 point, Times Roman; 1 inch margins all around; 1.5 line spacing.

Abstract, Final Draft, Presentation Dates and Board

Your next assignment that is due on MARCH 16/17 is your abstract. You have the forms that will guide you through the Abstract writing. Your FINAL DRAFT AND BOARD are due on March 22 and PRESENTATIONS will be taking place during that week.

Science Fair Assignments

Here we go! It is getting to be crunch time for Science, Engineering and Technology Fair!

Next Monday and Tuesday, your next to the last draft of your project is due. You should have finished ALL your experimentation last week. Please purchase your 3-fold board and begin to brainstorm about the layout of your presentation. Presentations begin in less than two weeks.
